Clinical and Research Special Interests

My specialist field is Oral Surgery. I was a Professor in Oral Surgery at the Kings College University and Honorary Consultant Oral Surgery at Kings College Hospital and Guys and St Thomas Hospitals until December 2024. I now practice as a private Oral Surgery Specialist Practice, in addition to my medicolegal practice. I undertake a broad range of work within the field of Oral Surgery and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery including the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck pain and nerve injuries. I have over 40 years’ experience in the management and treatment of patients with oral and facial pain and complications from dental and oral surgery. I have two areas of special interest and expertise.

Lingual and inferior alveolar nerve injuries

I am a leading expert in the diagnosis, prevention and management of lingual and inferior alveolar nerve injuries, which are usually sustained during the removal of impacted wisdom teeth.  Lingual nerve injury can be very debilitating, resulting not only in numbness but also painful dysaesthesia in the tongue. I ran a dedicated nerve injury clinic in KCL for over years for the management of patients with lingual and inferior alveolar nerve injuries.  Patients were referred from all over the UK and Ireland for assessment and treatment at my clinic. I am regularly invited to give lectures on the management of nerve injuries at national and at international conferences in the UK and abroad, including Australia, Netherlands, France, Germany and the USA. I have published over 258 peer reviewed publications and many of these dedicated to prevention and management of nerve injuries and complications related to surgery.

I have authored Clinical guidelines for the prevention of complications relating to;

Orofacial pain

I have developed and lead the Orofacial pain service at KCHFT for over 18 years. This involves a Multidisciplinary Clinic including dentists of all specialties, Headache Neurology, Liaison Psychiatry, Clinical Psychology, ENT and Neurosurgery. I have published over 150- peer reviewed publications specifically on orofacial pain research and am frequently invited to provide plenary lectures for Federations Dentaire International, British Dental Association, American Association Orofacial Pain, American Endodontic Society, British Pain Society, International Association for the study of pain, American Association Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, American Craniofacial Pain, British Association for the study of Headaches (BASH), Int. Headache Society and many others.

Publications

My PhD thesis was on ‘Trigeminal nerve injuries related to dental surgery’. I have published more than 50 papers in clinical and scientific journals.  These have been mainly on the aetiology, prevention and management of trigeminal nerve injuries. The branches of the trigeminal nerve, including the lingual and inferior alveolar nerves, are the sensory nerves that give sensation to the face and jaws and are often injured during dental and surgical procedures as well as in facial trauma.

I have presented more than 150 papers, each with a published abstract, at national or international scientific meetings.
